One of the first complex non-acidic Vitamin C formulas ever developed. TOTAL – C – FACTORS™ is a highly potent antioxidant bioflavonoid complex containing herbs long considered to have natural antibiotic properties. Vitamin C must be supplemented daily.

TOTAL – C – FACTORS™ is the most complete and gentle vitamin C and associated factor formula ever developed.  Each capsule supplies vitamin C in three different forms to satisfy the different needs of the body.

Vitamin C is essential to prevent the serious vitamin C deficiency disease called scurvy. Some researchers believe that amounts of vitamin C beyond the minimum daily requirement needed to prevent the vitamin C deficiency disease scurvy may have other valuable uses in the system. One major use is building healthy collagen or connective tissue which keeps us “glued” together.  Collagen is a necessary component in our blood vessels (prevents bruising), skin, cartilage, muscles, ligaments, bones, teeth, etc.

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant to protect us against fats and oils that can become rancid or peroxidized. It also protects against toxic chemicals such as pollution, smoke, alcohol and nitrates found in cured meats. Vitamin C may enhance the immune system and help resist bacteria, virus, etc. It aids in several vital metabolic processes, too numerous to mention. There have been numerous books, articles and essays describing possible uses and benefits of vitamin C.

TOTAL – C – FACTORS™
Since vitamin C is one of the most easily destroyed and “used up” vitamins, it must be replenished daily. The problem is that most vitamin C-rich foods have been cooked, canned, frozen, stored for long periods of time, or treated with chemicals. These factors decrease or destroy the vitamin C content of foods. The other route of getting one's daily supply of vitamin C from tablets or capsules relies upon large amounts of the strong cheap acid form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and does not include other nutrients related to vitamin C for total supplementation (bioflavonoids, fruits, etc.).

TOTAL – C – FACTORS™ contains Vitamin C as Calcium Ascorbate, Magnesium Ascorbate and Ascorbyl Palmitate, the Bioflavonoid Complex from Citrus and Rutin, Slippery Elm, Echinacea Root, Natural Orange Juice, Papaya Fruit and Acerola Cherry Fruit. Now, let's look at these ingredients in detail!

VITAMIN C (calcium ascorbate and magnesium ascorbate) in these two forms are water soluble and non-acid. Calcium ascorbate is supplied in 343 mg. per two capsules and magnesium ascorbate in 181 mg. per two capsules. This puts calcium to magnesium in approximately a 2:1 ratio. These expensive forms are used predominantly because they are basically neutral and are capable of supplying larger amounts of vitamin C without the harsher acidity found in ascorbic acid vitamin C.  Excess acidity from ascorbic acid vitamin C can cause an “acid burn” on the delicate mucous membrane of the digestive system. You can test this by placing an ordinary vitamin C tablet between the cheek and teeth for a few minutes and notice the rawness and welt produced on the cheek mucous membrane lining. This same thing occurs in the stomach and the delicate, normally alkaline, small intestine, especially when “timed release” ascorbic acid vitamin C is used in large amounts.

Excess acidity may also deplete the body's supply of pancreatic bicarbonates which are essential for normal alkalinity of the small intestine and the digestion of proteins. Incompletely digested proteins (peptides) can cause inflammatory allergic-like responses within the body. This is not to downgrade ascorbic acid vitamin C which has valuable antioxidant and detoxifying properties within the body.  Naturally occurring ascorbic acid found in fruits and vegetables may help in the digestion and assimilation of important minerals such as calcium and iron. The problem exists when large amounts of man-made ascorbic acid in tablet or powder form tends to over-acidify the system and TOTAL – C – FACTORS™ chelate (bind out) valuable minerals from the system such as calcium.

Ascorbic acid also acts as a diuretic and can increase the urinary loss of sodium, potassium and magnesium. Calcium ascorbate and magnesium ascorbate are forms of Vitamin C that are ready to be absorbed and assimilated.  On the other hand, ascorbic acid must first find calcium, magnesium or other minerals in the body, and chelate or join with it chemically in order to be useful.

VITAMIN C (ascorbyl palmitate) is another form that exists which is not only non-acid but also fat soluble, and can offer protection against rancid fats which can cause severe health problems. Although ascorbyl palmitate vitamin C is very expensive and not as well known as other forms of vitamin C it should be included in a complete vitamin C formulation in order to protect fats and oils from rancidity (peroxidation). In this respect the function of ascorbyl palmitate resembles that of the fat protection (antioxidant) role of vitamin E.  BIOFLAVONOIDS are a group of nutrients naturally found alongside vitamin C in fruits.  Bioflavonoids assist the functions of vitamin C.  TOTAL – C – FACTORS™ includes the bioflavonoid complexe, 90 mg, from lemon, rutin and hesperidin. The bioflavonoids are brightly colored substances found in the peel, rind and skin of fruits and some vegetables. The bioflavonoids protect the plant from oxidation.  Many researchers feel that bioflavonoids act similarly in the human body. Rutin has been used in the treatment of fragile blood capillaries.  Both rutin and hesperidin are believed by some researchers to act as cell membrane stabilizers and anti-oxidants.

FRUITS are contained in concentrated forms from the papaya, acerola cherry and orange.  These concentrates are all natural and contain vitamins, trace minerals and other nutrients.  Also contained are naturally occurring plant acids such as malic acid and citric acid, which help protect ascorbic acid from destruction.  These fruit acids are termed acidulants and act as buffers against excess acidity within the system.

HERBS are contained in TOTAL – C – FACTORS™.  Slippery elm was classified as a demulcent (soothing herb and antacid to the digestive tract).  This demulcent helps to insure the most gentle vitamin C formula available. Echinacea root was classified as an aid to the immune system and was said to be antiseptic and anti-viral when taken in large amounts.
